Meet Colton
Q: Tell us a little about yourself and where you grew up.
Colton: I was born and raised in Sheridan, Wyoming, and attended Big Horn High School. My life has largely been shaped by sports, playing a bit of everything, growing up and playing football through my undergraduate studies at Rocky Mountain College. The Sheridan community has always been special to me as I have met so many great people throughout my life that have helped me in numerous different ways. I have always appreciated the willingness of the people in the community to volunteer their time and money to support athletics and other things especially for the benefit of younger generations. The majority of my family also still lives in family, and I look forward to spending more time with my four nephews and watching them grow up. In my free time, I enjoy playing golf, hunting, traveling, and spending time with my family.
Q: What did you study in school, and what drew you to that field?
Colton: I earned my bachelor’s degree with majors in History and Political Science along with a minor in Pre-Law Studies. I have always had an interest in studying history, and Political Science fit into the mix as a helpful segway into law school. I chose my majors largely because of my undergraduate professors in both fields as they were both very engaging and continually helped me along my path to law school.
Q: What drew you to that field?
Colton: I chose to attend law school because of the vast opportunities that it provides both within and outside of the actual practice of law. Throughout law school, I focused my studies largely on estate planning, business planning, and the corresponding tax implications. I decided shortly into law school that the litigation and criminal law paths did not interest me, and I found the intricacies of estate planning and business planning interesting and engaging. I was drawn to the idea of formulating specific options and plans to best pursue the goals of each specific client.
Q: How did you first become interested in a career in financial services?
Colton: A career in financial services was not something I had considered for the majority of my life. Toward the end of my time in law school, and throughout my initial two years of practicing law, the idea came and went as I worked with trust officers and others in the process of creating or administrating estate plans. However, the interest was substantiated when Frank Boley approached me with the idea shortly after founding Legacy Ridge Private Wealth, and through extensive conversations with him and others in the finance industry, it was clear that the model he was working to build at Legacy Ridge Private Wealth better aligns with my career goals and my personal skills.
Q: How do you define success when working with clients?
Colton: From an administrative perspective, success in supporting clients is not defined by a single outcome, as each client’s needs and objectives are unique. Success begins with effectively gathering, organizing, and understanding client information to ensure their goals are accurately identified and documented. Because clients often have different priorities regarding the transfer of assets and wealth, achieving successful outcomes requires building strong relationships and ensuring all relevant information is obtained, tracked, and communicated appropriately.
Q: What attracted you to Legacy Ridge Private Wealth?
Colton: The business model that Frank Boley and the rest of the team at Legacy Ridge are working to build is something that I believe provides great value and convenience to clients. I have known both Frank and Susie since I was young, and when Frank approached me with his business model and began sharing information on the other team members, I knew that Legacy Ridge Private Wealth, and the people who make up this team, was something that I wanted to be a part of.
Q: What are you most excited to contribute to the team?
Colton: I am excited to contribute a different area of expertise and a different perspective to the team that draws on the experience I gained throughout my previous legal practice. I am also excited to contribute to our community outreach by volunteering my time in coaching different athletic teams and getting involved in the community I grew up in.
